Article 50 explainer; application and exceptions depend on the system and circumstances.

What happened

The European Commission’s Article 50 guidance explains transparency duties for certain AI interactions and generated content. It distinguishes providers from deployers and explains when people must be informed that they are interacting with AI. Exceptions and territorial scope require assessment. Detecting a chat-widget supplier does not establish that an AI system is being used.

What it means for your website

Start by asking whether your chat is operated by a person, follows a fixed script or generates answers using AI. The same supplier can support more than one mode. Then review the point where a visitor begins the interaction: is the explanation visible and understandable there? A privacy notice several clicks away serves a different purpose. Do not assume every UK website falls within the EU AI Act, or that every chatbot needs the same wording. GDPRFix flags visible signals for review; it does not message the bot or certify the complete AI deployment.

Three useful next steps

  1. Confirm the actual mode of your chat service.
  2. Assess EU scope and provider/deployer responsibilities.
  3. Review the disclosure where the interaction starts.
